Award-winning Vancouver artist Mia Weinberg, who created the pyramid sculpture at the entrance to the Muttart Conservatory, returns with “In the Land of Sleep”, a show of cameraless photography at the Conservatory, from April 7th to May 13th.

Weinberg uses a scanner to capture the source images for her digital photograms, creating art that calls attention to the tiniest fragments of organic matter. The images recall the sense of discovery and wonder of the world seen through a microscope, in the delicate details that reside in the groves and gardens, and in architecture. Weinberg often chooses to work with botanical specimens in the process of decay because their passage through death shows an extraordinary beauty which leads to regeneration and new beginnings.
All the images for In the Land of Dreams are from hydrangea flowers in various stages of decay.
Admission to the show is included with Conservatory admission

I recently travelled to England and France and saw some fabulous art including Michael Raedecker at the Camden Arts Centre (where I took pottery classes when I was 10 years old) who “uses a unique combination of thread and paint to create his atmospheric paintings.”
In Paris, I was particularly captivated by Alexander Calder’s wire portraits and sculptures at the Pompidou Centre. Watch video from minute 3:15 to 5:00 to get a sense of his use of line and shadow. (NB. the sound in the video is erratic so you may just want to watch on mute).
I also discovered a wonderful sculptor: Nicolas Lavarenne
